Because they contain a hybrid blend of unbleached (not chlorine whitened) fibers, the paper is a translucent natural light brown color. RAW is so thin that you can see through it. RAW Cones are often out of stock and very hard to come by. Here’s the issue – RAW cones use a water-based gum that takes a long time to dry. That means RAW cones are rolled, then they have to sit for 24 hours before they can be stacked and packed. It makes for very slow production. Other brands use pure Ethyl Vinyl Acetate (Chemical glue). Their glue dries almost instantly so they can produce their cones much faster and cheaper. RAW is all about the natural. We’d rather produce a small amount of a great product than produce huge quantities of a bad product. That’s the RAWlife.

RAW Connoisseur™ is one of our personal favorites. Each Connoisseur pack includes RAW Unrefined papers, RAW Unrefined Tips, and a unique outer sleeve with natural rubber band. Each package is printed on eco craft paper using a Japanese process of thermography. In short, they’re beautiful and the pride of RAW. 

Connoisseur Classic Papers + Tips [1 1/4]

RAW rollers are made on the island of Kudus in Indonesia. This is the place where clove cigarettes were first invented in the 1880’s. In Kudus there are still large cigarette factories that hand roll cigarettes. Some employ tens of thousands of people to hand roll cigarettes. In the 1930’s a factory was established to supply the local factories with hand rolling machines. This factory is the oldest existing rolling machine factory in the world. We formed a relationship with them in the 1990’s and now we are their biggest customer – thanks to you! Our factory knows how to make high quality rollers that last for tens of thousands of rolls. Sure we could probably save a ton of money by making our rollers in China like everyone else, but quality is more important than cost to both of us.

RAW Tips are made on an antique Fourdrinier paper machine. Whereas RAW papers are made in Alcoy Spain, we only have machines to produce thin paper in Alcoy. For the thick tipping paper we had to travel to an old paper mill in Northern China that was still using an original Fourdrinier. This was the only place we could find that still had one of these old machines in use, which we needed to make the special long-fiber paper for RAW tips. Want to know more? Modern paper mills use small-structure cellulose to make paper. The original paper mills used fiber instead. For tipping paper to perform best, it needs to be made from fiber – not just boiled cellulose. Fiber-based tips roll smooth AND have enough structural rigidity to both keep its shape in your mouth AND to not dissolve. There are precious few of the original Fourdrinier paper machines in use because they’re antiques and expensive to operate. We were lucky to find this old mill, it’s the only one in the world that can produce RAW tips to our specifications.
